What was originally built as a dwelling for colonists, was converted in 1855 to the Colony Hotel, after the plans for the Steeple Building were changed from a hotel to a school and housing. A pantry and barroom was added in 1857 and a kitchen wing added in 1858. The third floor featuring a large Ballroom and small guestrooms were built between 1861-1864 The Hotel is owned by the State of Illinois, and is part of the Bishop HIll State Historic site.
